Careers in Construction Month: Building Careers & Kansas City’s Future

Each year during October, Careers in Construction Month shines a spotlight on the skilled professionals who build, maintain, and shape the communities where we live and work. In Kansas City, the work of these talented skilled trades professionals surrounds us everyday in the commercial buildings and industrial facilities that drive our economy to the schools, hospitals, and landmarks that define our skyline. For nearly 100 years, Cornell Roofing & Sheet Metal has been part of that story. Founded in Kansas City in 1927, Cornell has built its reputation on skilled craftsmanship, safety, integrity, and investing in people. As we prepare to celebrate our 100th anniversary in 2027, we’re also looking ahead to the next generation of professionals who will continue building Kansas City.

Skilled Trades Build More Than Buildings

A career in construction can offer something increasingly valuable: the opportunity to learn highly specialized, in-demand skills while building a career with room to grow. In commercial roofing and sheet metal, skilled professionals combine hands-on craftsmanship with modern technology, advanced roofing systems, specialized equipment and ongoing safety training. Career paths can begin in the field and grow into roles such as journeyman, foreman, superintendent, estimator, project manager, and company leadership. At Cornell Roofing and Sheet Metal, members of our own leadership team have followed that path, starting as apprentices or field professionals and advancing into supervisory and management positions.

Building the Next Century of Kansas City

Careers in Construction Month is about more than filling jobs. It’s about introducing students, young professionals, and career changers to opportunities to create something tangible, develop skills that matter, and take pride in seeing the results of their work throughout their own community. As Kansas City continues to grow, it will take talented tradespeople to build and maintain what comes next. At Cornell Roofing & Sheet Metal, we’re proud of the professionals who have helped us build Kansas City’s skyline since 1927, and we’re excited about those who will help us build the next 100 years.
