Cornell Roofing & Sheet Metal Loves a Challenge!

Roofing the Iconic Commerce Bank Tower, a Postmodernism architectural masterpiece in Downtown Kansas City was a challenge and an opportunity. With its slopping metal roof rising above the 20-story structure at over 258 ft, the logistics, timing, safety planning, and challenges were all taken into consideration during the planning phases.

Scaffolding had to be erected around the entire building’s Penthouse and roof for both safety and logistical reasons. Applying Wall panels to the side of a building while over 200 feet up requires the kind of steely nerves that experience and Cornell’s and the Trades’ on-going training and certification programs help provide.

As Cornell’s Tradesmen and Tradeswomen complete this Downtown KC Icon’s roof, we promise to bring you some of the stunning shots that have made Commerce Bank Tower such an important part of the downtown skyline.

Why Everyone Should Care About the Heat

This year we have seen record-breaking heat waves. While experts on both sides debate the causes, the facts are clear. More and more men and women who work outside are being exposed to harsher conditions.  This is especially true in the roofing, construction, landscaping, and street maintenance fields to name only a few. In order to deal with the potentially serious and even deadly effects, Cornell, like many other trades, is starting our days earlier and ending before heat-stroke or other serious repercussions impact our workers. We know sometimes this means showing  up on a jobsite while it is still dark.

We hope everyone understands it’s no fun getting up at 2am but we try our best to keep our men and women safe while working so they too, can put food on the table.

Recent tragic news of a small child dying inside a van shows just how fast things can go wrong. It was estimated the temperature was over 100 degrees within 10 minutes and 110 within 20.

From all of us at Cornell, please stay safe this summer and enjoy the weather by being aware and looking out for each other.

Today Marks the International Women’s Day of 2019

Cornell Roofing & Sheet Metal is celebrating the 2019 International Women’s Day (IWD), by supporting this year’s theme; “Balance for Better.” According to the day’s official website, the holiday is “a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.” The first unofficial celebration of the day was in 1911. Beginning in 1913, the IWD has been celebrated each year on March 8th.

A Global Perspective

From its very beginnings in Copenhagen, the IWD has been, and is, a truly global event. The United Nations celebrated the IWD for the first time in 1975. The women’s movement has changed over the long history of the IWD. The globalization of media access, possibly best highlighted by the rapid growth and expansion of social media, has helped heighten the awareness of women’s issues.

A 21st Century Focus

Recognizing much has changed, both here at home and around the globe, the IWD is committed to celebrating more than a day marking the accomplishments of women. That realization is reflected in today’s focus on gender parity, an issue that impacts people in all countries regardless of gender. This focus will remain as one of the IWD’s top priorities moving forward.

All of us at Cornell wish women both here in the Greater Kansas City area and around the globe, a wonderful and prosperous day, not just on March 8th, but throughout the year.  In more and more fields including both the public and private sectors, women are taking on leadership roles, breaking through barriers and working side-by-side with their male counterparts to get the job done.

For more on the IWD and how you can get involved and for events surrounding today, click: https://www.internationalwomensday.com/About

There you will find additional links. From watching inspirational videos to lists and videos of women who have made a difference in many areas, the IWD urges us all to think globally but act locally on the issue of gender parity.[fts_facebook type=page id=117559644971824 access_token=EAAP9hArvboQBAG2FnnoJvrmEBJ1rWunhq7rmS5UDStZCPjQ7kj9MTfLdjvppPglZAAr8UhNqs0a3fMXHiYNU11dzyV83xeWI3ZCaaysZBUXgkCGRjcCQu6cxG9w38vBp33F6VTDY8SPXbzZBQLJ0LzZCBynirxJigZAn9OkMZAVEaAZDZD posts=6 description=yes posts_displayed=page_only]

Winter Weather Can Wreak Havoc on Commercial Roofs!

rust affecting the roofing structure

With this winter’s melting snow and ice, pooling water and now record setting low temperatures, just like your own home, commercial roofing systems need to be inspected for upkeep and maintenance. To stay one step ahead of Mother Nature, (or play a little catch-up!) checking on your commercial roofing system should include roof inspections to check for minor repairs at least twice a year. Cornell Roofing and Sheet Metal offers commercial roof inspections with records and photos of each inspection for the building owner to have and review. If necessary, we can also create a customized Roof Maintenance Program to help in early detection of potential problems, helping to extend the life of your commercial roofing system.

Contact us today to learn more about what we can do to help you maintain the integrity of your commercial roof system!

Building the Future of Construction

Independence area high schoolers gained valuable insight into the many career opportunities available in the Construction Trades. Cornell’s Bob Hoover, Repair and Maintenance Manager and Victor Speers, Assistant Project Manager took part in Turner Construction & Building Trades (C&BT) Expo held at Wyandotte High School.

The Independence School District’s Freshman Academy introduced students from Truman, Van Horn and William Chrisman high schools to five academies focused on helping freshman build a solid academic foundation as they start their individual paths towards higher education or a career in a trade represented by the Industrial Technology Academy. These five Academies represented pathways with Capstones featuring a variety of potential directions for these young people to explore during their high school years. The Industrial Technology Academy featured the largest number of Capstones with nine areas including the Construction Trades. Students are trained through a combination of high school and trade classes. College courses and internships were also highlighted.

Ditch Diggers – Poem

This poem says a lot about the construction world. If you are at work, play or home today it was a team of tradesmen and women in construction that built where you’re working, playing or you are comfortably resting. Homes, Offices, Schools, Hospitals, Airports, Highways etc.

Share if you enjoy Eric’s rendition.
