Why Late Summer Is a Smart Time for Commercial Roofing Maintenance

The sizzling summer months in Kansas City can be brutal, not just for people, but for commercial roofing systems too. Prolonged heat, UV exposure, and intense storms can accelerate wear and tear, compromise roofing materials, and create vulnerabilities that may not be obvious until it’s too late. That’s why late summer is the perfect time to assess the condition of your roof and get ahead of any issues before cooler, damp weather rolls in.

At Cornell Roofing and Sheet Metal, we’ve spent nearly a century helping businesses across the region protect their investments with proactive, professional roofing maintenance. August is a crucial time to inspect for:

  • Cracking, blistering, or UV damage from sustained heat
  • Warping or soft spots caused by moisture trapped under roofing layers
  • Drainage issues due to summer debris or clogged gutters
  • Seam and flashing failures that often emerge after temperature extremes

Routine commercial roofing inspections not only extend the life of your roof, they can also prevent costly emergency repairs during the fall and winter months. A thorough inspection from our expert team ensures small issues are caught early, and handled correctly.

Don’t wait for the first freeze to find out your roof isn’t ready for what’s ahead. Schedule your commercial roof inspection with Cornell Roofing and Sheet Metal today. Our experienced team will give you peace of mind and a plan to keep your property protected year-round.

Celebrating Leadership and Legacy: Mary McNamara’s Anniversary as Owner of Cornell Roofing

On July 2, 2007, a new chapter began for Cornell Roofing and Sheet Metal, one that would elevate a long-standing Kansas City commercial roofing company into a regional industry leader. That date marks the moment when Mary McNamara officially purchased the company, originally founded in 1927. But the date wasn’t selected at random; Mary intentionally chose July 2nd to honor her parents’ wedding anniversary, a symbolic nod to the importance of family in her leadership journey.

As Cornell Roofing and Sheet Metal approaches its 100th anniversary in 2027, we celebrate not just the legacy of the company, but also the remarkable path that brought Mary to the helm. A third-generation roofing professional, Mary grew up immersed in the industry. Her father, Jim, and uncle, Don, were influential leaders in roofing manufacturing, laying the foundation for her career. Still, Mary charted her own course, earning a BS in Accounting from Northern Illinois University and an MBA from Rockhurst University, before rising through the ranks in the roofing materials business.

At the time of purchase, Cornell Roofing and Sheet Metal was one of Mary’s clients. Taking ownership was a bold move—one that came with financial risk and immense responsibility. But Mary met the challenge with resolve. Under her leadership, the company grew from 26 to more than 90 employees, expanded capabilities, and solidified a reputation for quality and reliability in the commercial roofing and sheet metal sectors.

Now recognized as a certified Women-Owned Business, Cornell Roofing and Sheet Metal continues to thrive thanks to Mary’s strategic vision, her commitment to excellence, and a team that shares her values. Her contributions extend beyond Cornell, with leadership roles on numerous industry and community boards.

As we mark this meaningful anniversary, we thank Mary for her continued dedication to the company, her employees, and the Kansas City community.

Honoring a Legend: Bob Hoover Retires After Years of Dedicated Service to Cornell Roofing & Sheet Metal

At Cornell Roofing & Sheet Metal, we’re proud of the strong foundation we’ve built over nearly a century. That foundation has been shaped and strengthened by exceptional individuals like our beloved Repair & Maintenance Manager, Bob Hoover, who is officially retiring on May 30, 2025.

When Bob first joined the Cornell Roofing & Sheet Metal family in 2016, he brought with him not just years of roofing experience, but a reputation that preceded him. As President, Lenny Austin recalls:

“When we heard that Bob would be leaving one of our competitors here in town, we didn’t waste any time reaching out and inviting him to join the Cornell team. It was one of the most impactful decisions we’ve made.”

From day one, Bob led by example. His deep knowledge, problem-solving skills, and tireless “never quit until its fixed” attitude helped elevate our service department to one of the most respected in the Kansas City commercial roofing industry. Lenny adds,

“Bob’s professionalism, personality, and attention to detail put our service department on the map. Thanks to his leadership, the department is structured in a way that it will continue to grow and provide outstanding care for years to come.”

Bob’s legacy reaches far and wide. To our clients, he’s been more than a technician—he’s been a dependable hero. Gary Oakes of Shawnee Mission School District honored Bob in a recent tribute, recalling countless times Bob helped rescue school buildings—often on short notice—from roof leaks and weather-related emergencies.

“Bob Hoover is a structural load-bearing pillar in the roofing community. When he retires, the entire roof repair industry in Kansas City will totter, wobble, shake, and may collapse.”

Gary fondly (and humorously) recounts Bob’s legendary attic inspections—treks through tight, dusty, dark spaces full of hazards most would avoid. Bob once described his attic work as:

“A series of tight jams, belly crawls, swaying above second floors, head bumps on exposed screws, and navigating around flickering wires near sizzling server rooms.”

Despite the grit of the job, Bob always kept his sense of humor and calm demeanor. Cornell Roofing & Sheet Metal CEO, Mary McNamara shared,

“Bob is our steady Eddie—always smiling. I don’t think I ever saw him in a bad mood. Friday will make me cry.”

From Lenny’s chats about UTV upgrades and hot rods to Mary’s admiration of his steady presence, it’s clear Bob has left a personal and professional mark on all of us. He’s not just a coworker—we consider him family.

Bob, thank you for your years of unwavering commitment, craftsmanship, and care for Cornell Roofing, our crew, our customers, and the commercial roofing industry across the region. You’ve kept countless people dry, safe, and confident in their buildings. Your retirement is well-earned, and while we will miss you dearly, you will always be a part of the Cornell Roofing & Sheet Metal family.

Wishing you clear skies, smooth trails, and plenty of time to enjoy those hobbies you’ve shared with us over the years. Congratulations, Bob!

Prioritizing Safety During National Construction Safety Week 2025

At Cornell Roofing & Sheet Metal, safety is more than a policy—it’s a core value that drives everything we do. As we join the construction industry in recognizing National Construction Safety Week, May 5–9, 2025, we reaffirm our commitment to maintaining a safe, healthy, and productive environment for every member of our team.

With nearly a century of experience in commercial roofing and sheet metal services throughout the Kansas City area, we understand the risks our crews face on rooftops and job sites every day. That’s why safety is woven into our culture—from comprehensive training programs and regular safety audits to the use of state-of-the-art protective equipment and clearly defined protocols.

Top 5 Reasons to Have Your Commercial Roof Inspected this Spring

As winter fades and spring arrives, now is the perfect time to schedule a commercial roof inspection. Harsh winter weather can take a toll on roofing systems, and addressing potential issues early can save your business time, money, and headaches down the road. At Cornell Roofing & Sheet Metal, we know that routine inspections are key to extending the life of your roof and protecting your investment.

Here are the top five reasons to have your commercial roof inspected this spring:

1. Identify and Repair Winter Damage

Cold temperatures, ice, and heavy snowfall can cause roofing materials to expand, contract, and weaken over time. This can lead to cracks, leaks, and other structural issues. A spring inspection allows professionals to identify and repair any damage before minor issues become costly problems.

2. Prevent Costly Leaks and Water Damage

Spring showers can reveal leaks that may have gone unnoticed during the winter months. Water infiltration can cause extensive damage to insulation, electrical systems, and interior spaces. A thorough inspection ensures that drainage systems are functioning properly and that any weak spots in the roof are reinforced before heavy rains arrive.

3. Maintain Energy Efficiency

A compromised roof can lead to poor insulation and increased energy costs. If your roof has hidden gaps, deteriorated insulation, or damaged reflective coatings, it may be driving up your heating and cooling expenses. A spring inspection helps ensure your roof is performing efficiently, keeping energy costs in check.

4. Extend the Life of Your Roof

Routine maintenance and inspections are key to maximizing the lifespan of your commercial roof. Small issues, if left unchecked, can escalate into major repairs or even premature roof replacement. Regular spring inspections help protect your investment and keep your roof in top condition year after year.

5. Stay Compliant with Warranty and Insurance Requirements

Many commercial roofing warranties and insurance policies require routine inspections and maintenance to remain valid. Neglecting regular check-ups could lead to denied claims in the event of damage. Scheduling a professional inspection in the spring ensures you stay compliant and covered.

Schedule Your Spring Roof Inspection Today!

Don’t wait for a small issue to turn into a big problem. Protect your business with a professional commercial roof inspection from Cornell Roofing & Sheet Metal. Building a Stronger Independence: Local Companies Powering Progress

Cornell Roofing and Sheet Metal has proudly been serving Independence, Missouri, and the greater Kansas City area since 1927. Our success over the years has been driven by our commitment to quality craftsmanship and the strong relationships we’ve built with local partners. One recent project that exemplifies the power of local collaboration is the construction update of the former GEHA building slated to become the new Independence City Hall, located at Little Blue Parkway and I-70.

This project is more than just a transformation to become a new municipal building; it’s a symbol of growth and revitalization for Independence. We are proud to be a part of it as a key contractor, providing expert roofing and sheet metal services. What makes this project especially significant for us is our use of new, state-of-the-art crane equipment, which has greatly enhanced our capabilities on this and other large-scale projects. This investment in cutting-edge, heavy machinery equipment was made possible thanks to the support of Blue Ridge Bank and Trust, a local community bank that has served Independence and the Kansas City area since 1958. Headquartered just across I-70 from the new City Hall, Blue Ridge Bank and Trust has been a steadfast partner to many businesses in the area, and their financing of our crane equipment underscores the importance of local partnerships in driving our city’s progress.

The collaboration between Cornell Roofing and Sheet Metal and Blue Ridge Bank and Trust is just one example of how local companies can come together to fuel the vitality of Independence. When local businesses support each other, they not only contribute to individual success but also to the overall health of the local economy. As new developments and projects like the Independence City Hall continue to shape our community, it’s these partnerships that ensure our city remains strong and prosperous for years to come.

We’re honored to play a role in building the future of Independence, one project at a time.  To learn more about Cornell Roofing and Sheet Metal, visit www.cornellroofing.com or call us today at 816-252-8300.
